Zine workshop

Last week I decided to join a zine-making workshop which was organised by the Design Society at NTU. To be completely honest I was not sure what exactly a Zine was before I went there. Is it just short for magazine? Oh well. When I got there it was a very nice group of people who were all mostly doing degrees in the art and design field which was already a nice thing to have in common with everyone. A nice surprise to me is that the tutor who led the workshop was actually one of my tutors for my degree, so it was nice to get to know him. When we got to making the zines I was overwhelmed by the selection of magazines but also a huge selection of posters that were provided by Dizzy Ink, which is a Design and print workshop studio, based in Nottingham. I loved all the prints and colours we were able to use and made me feel really inspired and excited.

The first Zine technique we were demonstrated was the trouser technique. I was one of the people that struggled quite a bit when others were already on their 7th zine but I was still motivated and wanted to figure it out even if I was a bit slower. When I finally made my trouser zine I was quite proud and started cutting out bits to make it a bit more interesting.

The next thing we were doing was bookbinding. I was quite intimated as bookbinding seems like something that is really difficult but the way it was demonstrated it was so much easier than I expected which was really exciting to me.

I was really pleased with my final book and decided to do some collaging into it with some magazine cutouts at home.

Overall I was really happy that I joined this workshop as I took away so much inspiration and techniques that I can apply to my own work but also had lots of fun doing it. In the future, I will definitely join more workshops to broaden my knowledge and get inspired.
